Unix Tutorial Website

An educational web platform designed to simplify learning the Unix command line through categorized tutorials and interactive quizzes.

Role: UX Designer & Collaborator

Tools: Figma (wireframes), Adobe Illustrator (logos), HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript

Timeline: February–May 2024

Deliverables: Design document, wireframes, website (hosted on RIT Solace server)

The Challenge

Many users struggle to learn the Unix command line due to a steep learning curve and fragmented resources. The goal was to create a structured, approachable website that breaks down commands into manageable categories, enhanced with quizzes to reinforce learning.

Goals

  • Develop clear, categorized tutorials for Unix commands

  • Provide interactive quizzes to test user knowledge

  • Create initial wireframes to guide website design

  • Collaborate effectively with the development team and client

  • Gain early-career experience in UX design and client consultation

Design Process

Step 1 – Research & Planning

Analyzed existing Unix learning resources and common user difficulties to define core content and quiz integration.

Step 2 – Wireframing & Visual Design

Created wireframes using Figma to establish the layout and navigation structure, while website logos were designed with Adobe Illustrator.

Step 3 – Development Collaboration

Close collaboration with developers ensured the website was built effectively using HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript, with ongoing consultation to align with educational goals.

Step 4 – Testing & Refinement

Feedback from peers and clients was incorporated throughout development to improve content flow and quiz placement for better usability.

Step 5 – Client Presentation

Presented the full design and user flow to peers and client for review. Incorporated their feedback to make final refinements.

The Solution

  • Structured website organizing Unix commands into clear, categorized tutorials to simplify learning.

  • Integrated interactive quizzes at the end of each section to reinforce concepts and assess comprehension.

  • Visual design guided by wireframes and custom logos to support intuitive navigation and consistent branding.

  • Close collaboration with the development team ensured a functional, responsive site hosted on RIT’s Solace server.

Outcomes

  • Marked an important early step in a UX career.

  • Provided hands-on experience working with a development team and consulting directly with clients.

  • Helped shape educational content and website structure through collaboration.

  • Demonstrated how UX design bridges user needs and technical implementation.

What I Learned

This experience highlighted the importance of clear communication and iterative feedback when working across roles. It also reinforced how foundational wireframing and documentation are in guiding development. Though the live site and Figma files are no longer available, the project’s design document remains a valuable reference for my growth as a UX professional.
